Contest #2 : Feb 2019

Author : Jeet Guha Thakurta

Do you remember the Ice Bucket Challenge ? Just a few years ago, it rocked the planet from east to west. Today we will look at another challenge, with Ice, but without the Bucket. So get ready! 😀

Hello everyone! We came back with the next contest. Unlike last time, it will be simple this time but still very challenging. This month’s contest is called ‘Break the Ice’. Last date of entry is 25th February.

Why is ice slippery ?

This contest is simple. We all know, and perhaps also experienced that, ice is slippery. You can drag anything on ice very easily. We know ice is a solid substance. So how & why is it so slippery ? You have to explain the scientific reason behind this.

Please remember, there is no prize for the fastest answer. So no hurry-burry. The BEST entry will be selected as the winner from all the answers. Your answer should be to-the-point, detailed, easy-to-read, and informative. There is a word limit too. Your answer must be within 300 words.

Please give an original answer. You can study from any sources you want, but a blind copy-paste from somewhere will not help you here. Your answer has to be strictly within the word limit mentioned above. Any entry beyond the word limit will be right-away rejected. So try to understand the underlying physics yourself and present it in your own language.

You need to post your answer as a comment here. Only one answer is allowed from one participant. Once again, the best answer will be selected from all entries – it does not matter when the answer came, first or last. But yes, all entries must come before the contest closes on 25th February.

wish you all the best,
Jeet Guha Thakurta.

Ice is slippery beacause outer layer of ice have water layer, this is thin layer. Due to this layer ice is slippery.

The Slipperiness of Ice is the result of 3 unique properties of Water (or Ice).
    These Properties are:-
    1) Anomalous expansion of water
    2) Over-Causing Friction and Pressure caused on the surface of water
    3) Thin Layer of Semi Solid Temporary Layer of Water

    Explanation of Every Point-
    1) Water is Denser than Ice, Increasing its volume in Solid State(Ice).
    2) Instantaneous Heat producedby Friction and the Energy Constant of Ice help in creating a stiff slippery layer.
3)If you join (Touch slightly) two pieces of ice they stick in a moment (even if the temperature is very low. It is a consequence of inherident property of Ice to Expand with any Cohesive agent.
